What is the NYSC Exemption Letter?
The NYSC Exemption Letter is a document given to a recent graduate who is exempted from the one-year compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. This exemption is granted for specific reasons stated in the National Youth Service Corps Decree of 1993, Section 2(1). The letter serves as a substitute for the NYSC Certificate of National Service if needed.
Why is the NYSC Exemption Letter Important?
According to the National Youth Service Corps Decree of 1993, Section 2(1), the following conditions exempt individuals from serving in the NYSC program:
- Being over the age of thirty (30) at the time of graduation or obtaining a diploma or professional qualification.
- Having served in the Armed Forces of the Federation or the Nigeria Police Force for more than nine months.
- Being a staff member of the Nigerian Security Organization, the State Security Service, the National Intelligence Agency, or the Defence Intelligence Service.
- Having received a National Honour.
Individuals falling under these categories are exempted from the NYSC program and are issued Certificates of Exemption.

Printing the NYSC Exemption Letter is a simple process. Visit the official NYSC online portal (www.portal.nysc.org.ng) and log in using your credentials and password. Look for the option to ‘print Exemption Certificate’ on the portal.
How to Collect NYSC Exemption Letter/Certificate
It’s important to note that the process for applying and printing the NYSC exemption certificate differs for Nigerian graduates and foreign graduates. To collect your Exemption Letter, complete your online registration on the NYSC portal.
After payment of the required fee, your call-up number will be displayed on your dashboard. The exemption certificate will be forwarded to your institution three months after registration.
